Armenia’s goal is to make CSTO and EAEU more effective, says Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan

Armenia’s number one goal in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is to make the organization more effective, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told the Russian Kommersant newspaper in an interview.

“I am glad that Armenia’s presidency in the EAEU passed successfully. Personally I and our government were able to have concrete contribution in order for the EAEU to have more partners worldwide. And we continue to work in this direction,” PM Nikol Pashinyan said.

He said the same refers to the CSTO. “What is the goal here? To do everything in order to be able to make the CSTO – as an organization, as a security system which is very important for Armenia, Russia and other member countries – more effective. I think Russia has the same goal. We have a common goal with Russia over the CSTO. And we are working in this direction together. This isn’t an easy job, but I am very happy that as a result of these discussions the CSTO will truly become more effective for both Armenia, Russia and the others,” PM Pashinyan said.

He said the discussions of Uzbekistan’s possible membership to the EAEU is a very good process. “We are very interested. Now the relations between Armenia and Uzbekistan are developing very dynamically. Interesting fact: In the past 30 years no official meeting between Armenian and Uzbek leaders has taken place. The first one happened in October in Ashkhabad, where me and the Uzbek President met and agreed around mutual official visits. And of course, as a country presiding in the EAEU, we are interested in deepening cooperation with Uzbekistan. It will be very good if Tashkent decides to become an EAEU member,” he said.
